Activities Around Weatherham Farm's Exmoor Holiday CottagesExmoor Activities: walking, fishing, riding, mountain biking, deer watching, water sports, golf and other.
Our two, all year round, self catering cottages are well placed for all of these. Andrew is a keen on fly fishing and photography and we both enjoy walking and exploring Exmoor's hidden areas. Unspoilt Exmoor offers considerable scope for finding your own particular other activity. Although most of our guests in our Exmoor holiday cottages seem to like to 'do their own thing' and make do their own day's plans for their own exploring, walking, relaxing, etc for most of their time, some like to know what opportunities there are for possible 'additional activities'. This page is intended to give an insight and lead into some of these with fishing , walking . photography and houses and gardens to visit being described in detail on their own pages.
Horse Riding Exmoor has miles and miles of bridleways through very varied scenery.
Around us there are horse riding opportunities for all ages and abilities: from pony trekking as a first time riding activity to almost 'one- one' rides out for experienced riders and for hunter hire. From our own local knowledge and previous guests' experiences and reports, we can offer a range of contacts for horse riding. A lot of people have heard or Exmoor's own breed of horses -- the Exmoor pony, which is so few in number globally that it is actually clased as an endangered species. The Moorland Mousie Trust, about 20 minutes car from us, is dedicated to the promotion and conservation of the Exmoro pony and their centre is well worth a visit.
MOUNTAIN BIKING AND OTHER CYCLING MOUNTAIN BIKING Exmoor has both interesting routes through some spectacular countryside, some of which are extreme routes. Several of these are described in specific leaflets produced by the National Park. These contain maps of the main routes and alternatives together with descriptions of the terrain and countryside. We keep a stock of the ones close to us for our guests. These include descriptions of routes on and around Wimbleball Lake and Haddon, within two miles of us. Croydon Hill between us and Dunster about 8 miles away and North Hill just west of Minehead, overlooking the Bristol Channel, about 12 miles away. About 7 miles away is Dunkery Beacon with various routes up and around it, as shown on the right. Mountain bikes can be hired from Exmoor Adventures
OTHER CYCLING Although Exmoor is hilly, it is easy to plan cycle routes along roads and lanes without taking in too many hills. Those along river valleys offer shady routes for several hours cycling, such as from Dulverton north along the A396 and then west, through the village of Winsford up Winsford Hill and then taking a circular route back. Alternatively, there are panoramic routes along the top of upland moorland areas and valley ridges, such as along the B3224 which traverses Exmoor from east to west, and can be joined 4 miles north of us.
WATER SPORTS Wimbleball Lake, just two miles form us, is developing a water sports centre where visitors can hire Canadian canoes, kayaks, sailing dingies and rowing boats and also book tuition for these. All equipment, including life jackets, is provided and there is a new, large, shower room for anyone to use. Sailing dinghies are Laser Picos and Laser Stratos. On Friday evenings they offer Taster Sessions" for people, young and old, to try their hand in theses different "craft" under qualified supervision. More details will be added here soon, in the meantime for further information and booking phone Wimbleball Water Centre on 01398 371460. Exmoor Adventures also offer various water sport course and activities, including canoeing and kayaking and coasteering
COURSES AND ACTIVITIES: WATER SPORTS, MOUNTAIN BIKING, ROCK CLIMBING, COASTEERING AND MORE Exmoor Adventures on tel. 07976 208279 and Active Exmoor run courses in all these and also provides tuition to groups, families. Summer canoe and kayak courses are run on Wimbleball Lake, 2 miles from us. Kayaking and canoeing on rivers is possible in the winter, outside the fishing seasons.
DEERAND WILDLIFE WATCHING AND EXPLORATION BY LANDROVER Several small companies offer Landrover explorations to the inner parts of the moor, through woods, rivers and grassy upland moor inaccessible to normal vehicles. Here you will see hidden areas of Exmoor and view its wildlife, including its wild red deer -- great scope for photography! For something different, why not sit back and let some one else do the exploration for you, take you to parts of Exmoor that you probably wouldn't normally be able to visit and listen to their local knowledge? The nearest, Barle Valley Safaris, operates from Dulverton, is just 4 miles away and may pick guests up from our cottages
West Somerset Railway This is an extremely popular and famous attraction. It offers visitors the ability to tailor-make a half, or even a full, day to their own interests. It runs from Minehead, east to Bishops Lydeard, at the foot of the Quantock Hills, through 20 miles through fine coastal an inland scenery. With 9 more atmospheric old building stations it stops mainly in small villages offering other sites and interests, you can stop off, explore, have a quite beer in pub, have a picnic, explore new walks with your dog, (the train is dog friendly!), dine on the train, book a themed journey, or whatever you decide to do or see.
GOLF There are several golf courses within 30 - 40 minutes car from us, and more sightly further afield. All these have green fee arrangements for visitors: Minehead and West Somerset, The Warren, Minehead 01643 702057. Oake Manor, Oake, Bradford on Tone, (just west of), Taunton 01823 461993.
